You know amidst the hate, violence, and arrogance, I often push Jesus' salvation away and at times I feel I do not deserve it at all. And at times I wish he would forget me, because of the things that I've done, but he doesn't abandon us, we abandon him. I still feel I am not worthy of the time of a single thought of Jesus, yet he is always there when I come back to him on my knees, scared, and broken.
The Apostle Paul had a similar predicament - struggling in the flesh while being in the Spirit, doing the things which He knew were wrong while not doing what He knew was right. To this he said, "O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24)
We are not deserving of God's mercy and love. Even on our "best" day, when we feel most close to Him and our actions are most in line with His will, we still fall short of His standard. Yet our greatest motivator, our primary reason to press on, the most prominent reminder of who we now are, of Who we belong to, is the fact that in spite of who we are He loved us and continues to. That is our peace in the midst of failure and our strength to rise above it and, as Paul again said, to "press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:14)
Do not be dismayed, brother. Know that you are His and that is sufficient to rest in.
